HERE’S SOME FRESH AND LOCAL MUSIC VIDEOS TO ENJOY
Quit scrolling and enjoy these local music videos by artists from Newcastle, Central Coast & Sydney!
Just like everyone else, I often find myself mindlessly scrolling into the void of my phone with no real reason. We’ve all experienced and heard about social media addiction and we all know it’s (boring) old news. This on the other hand is some (exciting) new news. Here we have some local new music and to go with it, some music videos that have stopped me in my endless scroll and made me consciously say ‘wow, this is pretty fucking cool’.
After working behind the scenes on a couple of music videos, I’ve got to experience and see first hand the amount of passion and effort that gets poured into these projects. It all becomes worth it when the artist gets to see their vision come to life and furthermore when anyone can enjoy and experience it on the screen.
With entertainment adjusting drastically (and desperately) to the size of our hands, it’s sad to imagine these gems not being enjoyed to their full potential. Projects like these deserve more permanency. They deserve to be enjoyed and remembered - not just another lost scroll on the gram.
So here we are, a web page that will permanently be here to come back to and enjoy. Just another small step in our mission to share and create more opportunity for local creatives and artists. And no, we’re not MTV or Rage. We’re CHILDS MIND and this is the type of local talent we love and want to share! Fresh from the East Coast of Newcastle (Awabakal), Central Coast (Darkinjung) and Sydney(Eora).
So put the phone down, put these on the big screen and enjoy!
BOY SODA - Blink Twice
I feel like this list needs to start off with something to keep everyone wanting more and that’s exactly what BOY SODA does! On the back of his last single (and video) ‘Lil Obsession’ - Sydney based artist BOY SODA is back with another classic that you can sing along to on the drive to work. The cinematography in this video directed by Adam Saunders is as beautiful as Soda himself and was shot on an a small budget with only two props - a twenty dollar sheet from spotlight and some plastic from bunnings equaling $40 in total. With a blend of lighting effects on a journey through day to night and it’s effective mix of compositions, textures, editing and the unique style of BOY SODA himself - ‘Blink Twice’ is a true example that you can make something pretty with the bare minimum.

Dead Mall - ‘100% PURE POISON’
Newcastle band Dead Mall has teamed up with the (very) talented Thommy Crowe to create a fun animated visualiser that takes you on a journey through the realm of Crowe’s mind. There’s something very special that happens when Thommy touches a project and in this case you get to experience him bring life to his drawings by morphing them into a world of hybrid 2D and 3D characters and objects taking a ride through the perfect chaos of Dead Mall’s latest single ‘100% Pure Poison’. So buckle in, turn that volume up and enjoy the ride!

COZYFAZ - PRIMETIME
Central Coast rapper COZYFAZ dropped this hype video for his recent single ‘PRIMETIME’. Bleeding sepia, the video filmed by Tyren Heath goes all out in a fast paced roar that takes you through the scenes that set the mood for ‘Channel 13’ - a highly anticipated mixtape in collaboration with long-time friend and producer ‘13’ which was released at the end of June. Be sure to check out the new EP and watch on as these boys make waves for Central Coast’s Hip-Hop scene!

Stagger - HeadRip
Through cracked concrete, overcast skies and lone dancing we are introduced to Stagger’s latest video ‘HeadRip’. The Newcastle band has worked with Nathan Rathsam to film, direct and edit a visual treat that feels like it would still make sense if you watched it back to front and upside down. With shots blending together as if though you’re flicking through an art book - the mix of texture, colour, and creative compositions combine in a beautiful mix of energetic, yet calm chaos. HeadRip is the perfect introduction to the band’s fresh new era as they rebrand from their 3 year run as ‘Goon Gremlins’ and we can’t be more excited to see what they do next!

Mishayla - growing pains
Everybody needs an anthem and this is no exception for Newcastle indie pop artist Mishayla who wrote about targeting this song towards anyone who’s “ever felt like you had to make yourself smaller just to keep the peace…” A feeling heavily portrayed in her ‘growing pains’ music video directed beautifully (again) by Nathan Rathsam. The visuals feel gentle and soft while also revealing a darker undertone of frustration and the feeling of cutting ties with someone or something that holds you back. This video leaves you feeling claustrophobic but also hopeful. In true Newy style, Mishayla and her small crew shot the video at the creator incubator in Newcastle - a community driven warehouse filled with studios for artists of many mediums and styles.

Hand Models - Rats!
Let’s be honest, we’ve all seen a couple rats around the Central Coast. So it’s no stranger to see a few of them running a muck around our local landmarks in Hand Model’s debut video ‘Rats!’. The boys have finally lost their music video virginity - exploring the new format through the eyes of a rodent. We see moments of love, hate, fun and scurrying messily into the dark and showered woods at night (my favourite scene). From the rugged terrain of The Entrance skatepark to the fit and steady stroke through the ocean baths - this video captures the local essence of the Coast in a quirky (and dirty) way.
